“Thegoodnewsisthatearlyinterventioncan,inmanycases,helpmitigatethedamage.IftheNIHLisshorttermorsudden,thenthereisnoneedformedicalintervention.Thepatientneedstostophearingloudmusicandslowlyhissenseofhearinggetsrestored.Ifthehearingdamageislong-term,thenweassesswhetheritrangesfrommildtomoderateorseveretoprofound.Thenwedesignahearingaidtailoredtotheneedsofthepatientandheisadvisedonitsproperusageandgivenbasictraining.Ifapatientdoesnotrespondtohearingaids,heisadvisedtogoinforacochlearimplant,”saidAyas.
